Γιώργος Σοφιανίδης || Giorgos Sofianidis

Giorgos Sofianidis was born in Protohori (Portoraz) of Kozani. His father is from Protohori and his mother from Alonakia, Kozani. His origins from Pontos are from Kapikioi Matsouka. He received his musical teachings from older generation (1st and 2nd) Pontians. He is flattered by the fact that he can be a direct link with the music of these generations, a music with austere simplicity in its form and expression. Giorgos performs professionally playing Pontian lyra, shepherd’s pipe, bagpipe (aggeion or touloum), and as a singer.

We borrowed the eloquent words of our friend Vasiliki Tsanaktsidou to describe Giorgos Sofianidis, about how he “studied” music, and how he shares it with all of us:
“If you are born in and grow up in Portoraz, you can not love any other music other than traditional Pontian music.” It was the charming response of the artist, to my naive question about where he studied music. “I learned music on my uncle’s porch in Portoraz.” There in Portoraz it was meant for Giorgos Sofianidis to be introduced to and to love the music of his homeland, a country (Pontos) he loved before even going there, just like the majority of us. There, miles away from his homeland, his compatriots , first-generation refugees, took him by the hand and led him to the path of Pontian traditional music. And George, walked this path, and he honored this path. And he keeps on walking, searching and discovering our place, our roots, through our music.

To get to know this music, George was not simply present among the people who brought this music from Pontus, he walked beside them. He did not just see them, he observed them. He did not simply hear them, he listened carefully to them, He went to the pastures, and lived and sang with the women from the mountains. He sat down with the weary men who returned from the harvesting fields to the café, and there he learned their “mouxapet”. The mouhapet is not simply entertainment. It is a rite. It is a confession of love, a searching of the soul, the birth of friendship, and it is also memorial service. Because when you are a Pontian, you have, above all, a responsibility. You remember and you honor the dead, the missing, and the tortured. The apologies they never told you.

Giorgos Sofianidis is the ambassador of this music. He searched for our story and our music, and whenever these two meet, Giorgos takes the microphone, closes his eyes, and departs. He goes on a journey. Only in these journeys, he is never alone. Giorgos takes us with him. Always. And we travel. We travel to the villages of Matsouka, and we ascend to Mount Mela to go to Panagia Soumela. We walk beside our ancestors on their courseless destination. We pass rivers and seas and we taste how it is to be a refugee. Or simply, we fall in love, we promise, we hope. Have a great trip!”

We would like to cordially thank Mr. Giorgos Sofianidis for his participation in Radio Trapezounta Boston! We also would like to thank Ms. Sofia Machairidou for all her assistance!

There is a technical problem with the video that unfortunately has deteriorated the quality of the audio. Even with the inferior audio quality, Giorgos Sofianidis is always extremely enjoyable to watch and listen. Thank you for your understanding!
